Boost Analysis

Late last year I changed my exhaust and went to the EAS dyno day.  I always wanted to get back to the same dyno as my other runs to see the bump in power, but instead I ran at the EAS dyno day.  So this past weekend I got the chance to get back to the original dyno to see the difference from my baseline and also to see the difference between the two dynos.

My car is a 2008 BMW M3, 6MT with an ESS VT1-535 on it.  I bought the kit with a 0.5 PSI upgraded pulley.  But other than that, the kit is an off the shelf ESS VT1 kit.  PG came along to help with the dynos, do his usual data logging thing, and he measured my supercharger pulley so people to know what I'm running.

My baseline was 482whp and 320wtq SAE (490whp and 326wtq STD).  I only changed the exhaust and did both CAT deletes since my this baseline before going to the EAS dyno day.  At the EAS dyno day, the car put out 526whp and 342wtq SAE (540whp and 350wtq STD).  Most people thought these numbers were way too high for an ESS VT1 kit.  So it's yet another reason to go back to the same dyno as before and let PG do all of his data logging thing.

Even at this dyno, the car put out some pretty big numbers.  The results are a little bit lower than the EAS dyno, but not by a whole lot.  Run-3 produced the same results as Run-4, but the boost looked really different.  We asked the dyno operator why this happens, and he didn't really know.  You're welcome to download the files through the dyno database and take a look for yourself.

Dyno Database:

Individual Dyno Results:

Individual dyno results are shown below.  SAE corrected results are shown twice, using two different sources.  The first source (SAEd) are the SAE corrected results straight from the Dynojet.  The second source (SAEk) of SAE corrected results are obtained by using the Kestral 4500 weather station data for each individual dyno run and running it through an independent SAE correction formula.  This ensures that the dyno results are accurate and can be independently audited and verified for authenticity and accuracy.

The legend below has the following meaning:

  • Dyno Run:  Dyno run file
  • Boost Avg:  Boost calculated using trend line.  This is the "official" boost for this dyno run.
  • Boost Peak:  Peak boost observed on this dyno run.
  • Temp(F) = Temperature (Farenheit)
  • RelH = Relative Humidity
  • Pressure(Hg) = Barometric Pressure
  • DA(ft) = Density Altitude
  • WHP(unc) = Uncorrected wheel horsepower
  • WTQ(unc) = Uncorrected wheel torque
  • WHP(SAEd) = SAE Corrected Horsepower using Dynojet weather station.
  • WTQ(SAEd) = SAE Corrected Torque using Dynojet weather station.
  • WHP(SAEk) = SAE Corrected Horsepower using Kestrel 4500 weather station.
  • WTQ(SAEk) = SAE Corrected Torque using Kestrel 4500 weather station.
